My daughter's first class field trip of the year was to an orchard about 15 miles from the school. Agriculture is a large presence in the community of the Hudson Valley and one of the many reasons why I love living here.
On the farm the kids were encouraged to try the apples, taste the different kinds, and I think each kid ate their own weight in apples out in the field. They boarded the bus back to school loaded down with the bag of apples they picked themselves, exhausted from all of the running and exploring (and learning!). I'm encouraged to find support for local agriculture, community and healthy food and lifestyles incorporated into the school system.
